Zhangzhou Normal University (漳州师范学院) is one of the key universities in Fujian Province. It is situated in Zhangzhou, a well-known historical and cultural city on the west coast of Taiwan Straits, and an open-up city in southern Fujian Province.
The university was formerly known as Fujian No.2 Normal College founded in 1963. In 1986, with the approval of the State Education Committee, the former Fujian No.2 Normal College was renamed as Zhangzhou Normal University. In 1992, the university was authorized to confer bachelor degrees, and in 2000 it was among the first batch of normal colleges and universities in passing the qualification evaluation by the Ministry of Education in the teaching of undergraduates.
In 2003, it was authorized to confer master degrees after passing the evaluation by the Academic Degree Apraisal Committee of the State Council, and began to take in candidates of master degrees. In 2008, Zhangzhou Normal University received a straight-A score in the undergraduate level Teaching Appraisal organized by the Ministry of Education.

Zhangzhou Normal University covers a total area of 1,153,000 square meters, with a total floor space of 510,000 square meters, having a library with 1,265,000 volumes of paper books and 1,108,000 volumes of electronic books and periodicals.
The university now has a high level faculty of 1,252, among whom 902 are full-time professional teachers including 415 professors and associate professors, and 531 doctor and master degree holders. The university currently consists of 18 departments or schools such as Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, Department of Mathematics and Information Science, and School of Overseas Education.
Zhangzhou Normal University has set up 26 research institutes such as Institute of Fujian-Taiwan Culture, Institute of Educational Science, Institute of Applied Psychology, Institute of Applied Chemistry and Institute of Human Resources. It now has 2 provincial key laboratories, 1 provincial humanity and social sciences base, 9 provincial key disciplines, and 4 provincial demonstration centers of experimental teaching.
Zhangzhou Normal University is now sticking to the guiding principle of educational renovation and setting up cooperative linkage with domestic and overseas higher education and research institutes, in order to make itself into a comprehensive university of relatively large scale with outstanding educational merits and characteristics.
